Kirtan at the Gandhi Hall - Lenasia, South Africa

The crowd waiting to get in. The Gandhi Hall

Our penultimate concert in South Africa took place at the Gandhi Hall in Lenasia, a suburb of Johannesburg. The ISKCON temple is also situated in Lenasia, so much of the audience was made up of congregation, friends, family and supporters of the temple. However, our hosts had also been hard at work selling tickets and advertising in local shopping centres and in other small businesses. Considering it was a week night, the turn out was very good, with a great deal of the 1000- seater auditorium being filled.

The Holy Name Rises at Sun City! - Krishna Balarama Youth Retreat - Day Two

Dawn breaks in the South African bush. The lions stir and stretch in the tall grasses. Birds sing in chorus from high in the branches of the flowering acacia trees, and with every minute, the sky changes hue, first banded with pink and gold that gradually gives way to the wide expanse of soft blue. The crickets chirp. After a blissful late night kirtan, the campers sleep on, blissfully unaware…

Eventually, there was movement! Though we were a little behind schedule, we nevertheless gathered in the makeshift temple at a nearby hotel, and had a dynamic morning kirtan led by Ananta. After five minutes everyone was dancing away their morning sleepiness, and we ended feeling energized and ready for the full day ahead.

Akincana and Ananta Krishna das serves breakfast.

Bhajans in the Bush- Krishna Balarama Youth Retreat - Day One

Loading up into our double decker bus to travel to Sun City / Sundown Ranch Akincana leading kirtan on the bus.

We spent several days  at our home base in the suburbs of Johannesburg, getting to know our hosts and preparing for the weekend retreat to come. Since it wasn’t vacation time, everyone juggled school and work, calling in sick or telling quite outrageous lies in order to spend time with us and take care of anything we needed. Kartik prabhu even confessed that he told his boss he had food poisoning, after eating something his mum had just brought back from her pilgrimage to India! In between looking after us, and making ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ trips in to respective offices and campuses, the core team of retreat organisers were working flat out to ensure everything was ready for the weekend. Krishna Balaram Youth Group Kirtan - South African Style

Sound Check in the front yard Kartik - South African tour organizer

After some needed R&R time (rest and rehearsal!), we got to attend our first meeting of the Krishna Balarama Youth Group. This was to be the first time we would meet many who had been working tirelessly to bring us here, and also our first chance have kirtan with them.

Fusion Kirtan at Alex Gray’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM)

CoSm - Chapel of Sacred Mirrors Ray Ippolito, Nick, John Kruth, Kamaniya and the old gang at CoSM

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when we walked into the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors exhibit. I had seen some of the art online, I had expected to be taken off guard a little, but I had not expected to come face to face with many of the teachings that I had read about in vedic literature all in one space. To really look at an art gallery and see how the soul makes a difference in life, how connecting with the soul can make a difference in life…to see the soul literally journey from the very beginning of life to the end of it, and still go beyond, was amazing. It was a new way to reinforce things that I had already known but had not thought of in such an artistic way, but Alex Grey had. Bursting with light and showing that all of us have a potential and a purpose over simply the muscles and bones of this body, Alex Grey has begun to show the world that we have a consciousness which is important, which makes up the beauty that we are as human beings. I had never seen such a tribute to what we really are before. Continue reading ‘Fusion Kirtan at Alex Gray’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM)’
